Central Union Oil executives indicted in Taiwan carcinogenic oil scandal

The Taichung District Prosecutors Office has indicted 15 individuals and four companies following a major food safety scandal involving carcinogenic cooking oil in Taiwan. The investigation centers on Central Union Oil, which produced seven batches of soybean-based oil containing benzo[a]pyrene levels that exceeded legal limits.

Prosecutors allege that the contaminated oil was used in meals at more than 1,000 schools. The investigation revealed that Central Union Oil executives were aware of abnormal test results as early as May but failed to recall the products or notify the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration until June 30. Furthermore, the company is accused of underreporting the actual volume of contaminated oil produced.

Other companies, including Taisun Enterprise, Fwusow Industry, and Formosa Oilseed Processing, are also implicated for allegedly continuing to sell or distribute the contaminated oil despite knowing of the risks. The companies are accused of obtaining approximately 887.31 million New Taiwan dollars in illegal profits. Several high-ranking executives have been detained as part of the ongoing legal proceedings.
