Chungcheongnam-do Governor responds to Jicheon Dam decision
Chungcheongnam-do Governor Park Su-hyeon announced the province's position regarding the government's decision to proceed with the construction of the Jicheon Dam. While expressing personal opposition to the dam, Park stated that the province respects the government's decision following the recent public deliberation process and will take responsibility for the subsequent stages.
Park emphasized that the government must provide transparent explanations to ensure resident understanding and empathy. Specifically, he requested clarity on the dam's role in the Chungcheong region's advanced industries, its effectiveness in reducing flood risks in Cheongyang and Buyeo, and a comparison with alternative solutions.
Furthermore, the Governor demanded increased national support and regional development plans for Cheongyang and Buyeo. He argued that since the dam is being built for national necessity, the burden should not fall solely on local residents. To support this, the province plans to conduct research for a comprehensive support plan, focusing on attracting businesses, developing tourism, and improving living infrastructure to turn the project into a growth opportunity for the region.
