Chungcheongnam-do selected for global green bio research project
Chungcheongnam-do has been selected for the ‘Top-tier International Joint Research’ project led by the Ministry of Science and ICT. This initiative aims to establish the region as a global hub for green bio research and industry.
A research consortium has been formed including KAIST, UNIST, POSTECH, and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). The primary objective is to develop core technologies for upcycling chemical industry byproducts into high-value materials.
The project will receive up to 2.3 billion KRW in annual research and development funding for a maximum of 10 years. The participating institutions plan to foster world-class research through joint R&D projects, regular seminars, and researcher exchanges.
Chungcheongnam-do intends to integrate these efforts with the KAIST Green Bio Research Institute, which is scheduled to begin operations in the Naepo Agri-Bio Complex in 2027. The province aims to create a virtuous innovation ecosystem by sharing original technologies and research results with local green bio companies to facilitate technology transfers and commercialization.
