Chungcheongnam-do to industrialize pine wilt disease prevention

The Korea Forest Service and Chungcheongnam-do have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish an industrialized prevention system for pine wilt disease. This initiative aims to transform timber damaged by the disease into valuable resources rather than simply disposing of it.

The model focuses on a phased utilization approach: high-value products like sawn timber and boards will be produced first, followed by the use of remaining materials for fuel. To prevent the spread of the disease during transport, the plan includes specialized methods such as using mesh-covered boxes for logs and large-scale fumigation processes that last at least 14 days.

Chungcheongnam-do was selected as the initial site due to its proximity to various wood chip consumers and power plants. Following the successful implementation of this model in the region, the Korea Forest Service plans to expand the system nationwide.
