Chungnam Province pursues relocation of power company headquarters

Chungnam Province is intensifying efforts to attract the integrated headquarters of national power generation companies. The provincial government is shifting its strategy from seeking regional compensation to presenting the relocation as a national energy strategy.

According to the Chungnam Research Institute, the province's existing power infrastructure and its concentration of 28 out of the nation's 52 coal-fired power plants make it an ideal hub for transitioning to renewable energy. Proponents argue that locating the headquarters in Chungnam would reduce the transmission burden on the Honam region and provide stable power to high-consumption industries in the metropolitan and Chungcheong areas.

Governor Park Su-hyeon has expressed a commitment to securing the headquarters but cautioned against an “all or nothing” approach that could destabilize local sentiment. While supporting the bid, he noted that even if the integrated headquarters is located elsewhere, existing subsidiaries could remain in the region to serve as key hubs. The province plans to present its finalized strategy to the central government and the National Assembly, with a public debate scheduled for November.
