Church of England Announces 2026 General Synod Election Process
The Church of England is opening nominations for its 2026 General Synod elections. Clergy and lay members can stand to represent their dioceses at the national assembly, which drafts legislation, approves the church budget and debates matters of national and international importance. Nominations are accepted from 14 August to 7 September; lay candidates need two Deanery Synod electors, while clergy require two fellow clergy to nominate them. Voting will run from 21 September to 13 October, after which elected members will serve five‑year terms.
Both the Diocese of Manchester and the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham have issued detailed guidance. Candidates may submit an election address and will receive support for travel and accommodation to attend twice‑annual Synod meetings. The Presiding Officer for the Southwell diocese, Mrs Amanda Redgate, is handling nomination form distribution and inquiries.
