Church of Greece proposes social media guidelines for clergy

The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece has proposed a framework of ten principles to regulate the social media presence of clergy. The initiative, presented by Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Chalkis during a session presided over by Archbishop Ieronymos, follows discussions regarding the rise of ‘priest influencers’ on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.

The guidelines aim to balance the use of digital tools for pastoral outreach—particularly to younger generations—with the need for ecclesiastical discipline. The Church does not seek a total ban on social media but emphasizes ‘discernment’ and responsibility. Key principles include:

• Clergy must maintain their ecclesiastical identity online and remain connected to their local Bishop and Church. • They should avoid creating a personal ‘brand’ or seeking online celebrity status. • Clergy are encouraged to exercise restraint, avoiding unnecessary public commentary on every news event. • The dissemination of unverified information and engaging in online confrontations involving insults or irony is prohibited. • Confidential pastoral communications and private messages must be protected.

The proposal also highlights the need for training regarding digital platforms, the risks of addiction, and the impact of Artificial Intelligence.
