Church of Greece elects new Assistant Bishop

The Holy Synod of the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece held its third regular session on October 8, 2026, presided over by Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens.

A central issue addressed was the pending ordination of Christodoulos Kotsifis as Bishop of Asteri. Following a proposal by Metropolitan Symeon of Nea Smyrni and a subsequent withdrawal of his acceptance of the original election by Kotsifis, the Synod reached a resolution.

The Synod unanimously approved the election of Archimandrite Christodoulos Kotsifis as Assistant Bishop to the Holy Archdiocese of Athens, holding the title of the former Bishopric of Neochori. The decision followed a discussion involving several candidates, including Archimandrites Maximos Kappas and Kleopas Giannakopoulos.
