Church of Serres and Nigrita holds annual assembly for youth catechists

The Church of Serres and Nigrita held its first annual assembly of priests responsible for youth, catechists, and female catechists on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The event took place at the Holy Monastery of Agia Paraskevi in Serres to mark the beginning of the 2026-2027 missionary and catechetical year.

During the assembly, Archimandrite Nikitas Chalemis, the coordinator of youth and catechetical work, spoke on the mission and service of religious instruction. He emphasized the enduring value of catechesis, particularly when targeting youth in the modern era, and highlighted the need to strengthen these efforts to provide more substantial religious education.

Metropolitan Theologos of Serres and Nigrita addressed the assembly, discussing the evangelical and ecclesiological principles of this work. He described catechesis as a primary and sacred duty of the Church, rooted in the command to ‘go and make disciples of all nations’. He noted that the importance of educating the youth is driven by pastoral responsibility and the specific needs of the current times.
