Church of Sweden initiates theological study on polyamory
The Church of Sweden has launched a multi-year theological investigation into polyamory and LGBTQIA+ identities. This follows a 2024 mandate from the Church Synod to examine whether the concept of couplehood is a necessary component of Christian relationship ethics or a historical norm that requires scrutiny.
A knowledge compilation authored by Dr. Martin Langby of Uppsala University serves as the starting point for this work. The report does not provide a definitive answer but suggests the Church must systematically analyze whether values such as faithfulness and responsibility necessarily require sexual and romantic exclusivity. It also questions if multi-partner relationships should be analyzed on their own ethical premises.
While the Church aims to provide peace and support to all people, internal debate continues regarding the balance between evolving social norms and traditional biblical teachings. The investigation seeks to determine if the Church is prepared to re-examine its theology of cohabitation as thoroughly as it has addressed other social norms in the past.
