Chusa Museum to host special exhibition on Kim Jeong-hui’s stone inscriptions

The Chusa Museum in Gwacheon is hosting a special exhibition titled ‘Chusa Mukhyang: The Heart of Chusa Carved in Stone’ starting September 16, to commemorate the 240th anniversary of the birth of Kim Jeong-hui, known as Chusa.

This exhibition marks the first time that 45 stone inscriptions (epigraphs) collected by the museum through five years of nationwide research will be displayed together. Unlike personal letters or diaries, these stone inscriptions were created with the intention of lasting for generations, representing the pinnacle of Chusa’s artistic and academic mastery.

The exhibition is divided into three parts: ‘Chusa’s Calligraphy,’ ‘Calligraphy of Chusa’s Era,’ and ‘Calligraphy of the Chusa Family.’ It aims to provide a multi-dimensional view of 19th-century Joseon calligraphy, covering individual works, contemporary calligraphers, and the lineage of calligraphic styles within his family.

An opening ceremony featuring performances and curator explanations will take place on the afternoon of the 16th. To support the exhibition's academic value, the museum will also publish a scholarly catalog documenting the results of its five-year investigation.
