Apucarana declares emergency after severe downburst storm
A severe storm, identified by Simepar as a downburst rather than a tornado, struck Apucarana, Paraná, causing widespread destruction. The event featured wind gusts of up to 124.9 km/h and heavy rainfall, resulting in over 600 fallen trees and significant damage to infrastructure.
Local authorities have declared a state of emergency to facilitate humanitarian aid. The Civil Defense estimates that approximately 5,000 residences have been affected, with preliminary residential damage costs exceeding R$ 3.7 million. The most impacted areas include Jardim Ponta Grossa and Jardim Trabalhista.
Utility services were heavily disrupted, with up to 90% of the electrical grid compromised and over 60,000 consumer units losing power at the peak of the event. Copel and the municipal government are working to restore electricity, with over 95% of service already reinstated in some areas. Water supply was also affected, prompting the distribution of thousands of liters of water via water trucks to assist residents.
