Chyna's unconventional 1999 Emmy Awards red carpet appearance

Joan Marie Laurer, known professionally as Chyna, made a significant impact on red carpet fashion during the 1999 Emmy Awards. At the height of the World Wrestling Federation’s popularity, Laurer arrived in a leather, rhinestone-studded dress designed to highlight her muscular physique, a departure from the traditional glitzy aesthetics of the era.

Her appearance was seen as a challenge to conventional beauty standards, particularly the ‘90s trend of waifish silhouettes. While her look was celebrated by some as a symbol of female strength, she also faced scrutiny and bullying regarding her appearance and gender.

Throughout her career, Laurer achieved several milestones in professional wrestling, including becoming the first woman to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship and being the first woman to participate in a Royal Rumble match.
