CIA agents killed in Chihuahua vehicle accident
Two CIA agents, Richard Leiter Johnston III and John D. Black, died in a vehicle accident in the Sierra Tarahumara region of Chihuahua, Mexico. The incident occurred on April 19 near the town of Polanco in the municipality of Morelos, when the vehicle they were traveling in fell approximately 200 meters into a ravine and caught fire.
According to investigative reports and witness testimony, the agents were part of a mission involving the Chihuahua State Investigation Agency (AEI). They were reportedly traveling with Pedro Román Oseguera Cervantes, the director of the AEI, and his escort, Manuel Genaro Méndez Montes. The group was returning from an operation in which they had located and destroyed six clandestine methamphetamine laboratories, including one of the largest detected in Mexico.
John D. Black was a former Marine who served in Afghanistan. Richard Leiter Johnston III was a former U.S. Army Special Forces member who also served in Afghanistan and had experience in the Philippines. Both were identified as experts in drone technology and were reportedly in Chihuahua as instructors for the U.S. Embassy, specializing in drone training.
