CIA contractor Ian Brinksman indicted for leaking classified documents
The U.S. Department of Justice has indicted CIA contractor Ian Brinksman for leaking sensitive classified information regarding United States policy in the Middle East. According to FBI affidavits, Brinksman allegedly sent these documents to journalist Aída Chávez, a former correspondent for The Nation and The Intercept who currently publishes via Substack.
Investigators were able to trace the leak through metadata from mobile operators and commercial Gmail accounts rather than through direct wiretapping. The FBI noted that the timing of Brinksman’s mobile calls coincided with the publication of articles citing CIA documents. The investigation highlights a lack of operational security, as the individual utilized personal devices and commercial email for the transmission of sensitive material.
