CIA Director John Ratcliffe conducts secretive Moscow visit

CIA Director John Ratcliffe conducted a secretive visit to Moscow to meet with Aleksandr V. Bortnikov, the head of Russia’s FSB intelligence service. Reports on the purpose of the meeting offer differing perspectives.

Some officials state that Ratcliffe delivered a bleak assessment of the Russian war against Ukraine, urging Russia to negotiate a deal before its military and economic conditions deteriorate further. This version of the visit reportedly included no threats regarding consequences should President Vladimir Putin choose to continue the conflict.

Conversely, former Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves suggested the meeting may have focused on the Iran conflict rather than NATO security. Ilves noted that the United States has concerns regarding Russia providing targeting information to Iranian forces, which could impact American military assets in the region.
