CIA Director John Ratcliffe meets Russian intelligence chiefs in Moscow
CIA Director John Ratcliffe conducted a series of high-level meetings in Moscow this week, engaging with top Russian intelligence officials. During an unannounced meeting with Sergey Naryshkin, the director of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, Ratcliffe reportedly requested that Moscow withhold intelligence from Iran to prevent the disclosure of U.S. military assets in the Middle East.
Ratcliffe also reportedly met with FSB chief Alexander Bortnikov. During this encounter, the CIA Director allegedly warned that Russia’s military and economic position could worsen without serious negotiations. Ratcliffe has publicly asserted that the life expectancy of a Russian soldier on the frontline is less than 35 minutes and noted that Russia has gained only about 1% of Ukrainian territory during his tenure.
Russian officials have characterized the meetings as routine. Sergey Naryshkin described the encounter as a “working-level meeting” involving sensitive matters, stating there was “nothing unusual” about the visit. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that President Vladimir Putin was briefed on the discussions but noted that it remains unclear if the visit will improve bilateral relations, which are currently in a “profound crisis.”
