CIA Director John Ratcliffe warns US of Chinese tech lead at defense summit

At the Pennsylvania Defense & Innovation Summit in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, CIA Director John Ratcliffe warned that China’s growing advantage in a wide range of strategic technologies poses a major problem for the United States. He cited an Australian Strategic Policy Institute study released on 2 January 2026 that found China leads the United States in 44 key technologies, including advanced materials, artificial‑intelligence algorithms, 5G/6G communications, hydrogen energy, and quantum communications.

Ratcliffe urged faster development and deployment of next‑generation AI models to keep U.S. intelligence and national‑security capabilities ahead. He also highlighted ongoing U.S. export controls on advanced chips and equipment aimed at preventing China from strengthening its military and commercial sectors. The remarks reflect the broader, long‑standing competition between Washington and Beijing over AI, semiconductors, telecommunications and quantum computing.
