CIA faces unprecedented exodus of veteran personnel

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is experiencing an unprecedented exodus of personnel, with estimates suggesting more than 1,000 employees have left the organization since the beginning of 2025. This contraction, which follows a workforce of approximately 22,000, is being compared to the major reductions seen in the early 1990s following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The departures are attributed to broader federal workforce reductions driven by the Trump administration and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The loss of veteran officers—specialists in recruiting informants, building clandestine networks, and analyzing conflicts—raises concerns regarding intelligence capabilities and counterintelligence vulnerabilities.

In addition to the loss of expertise, the surge in departures has overwhelmed the agency’s pension system. Former employees have reported delays of up to nine months to receive full pension payments, forcing some to withdraw retirement applications or rely on personal savings to cover the gap.
