CIABOC to expand regional presence and recruit 971 staff

The Committee on Public Finance (COPF) has approved the 2027 budget estimates for the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC). During a meeting chaired by MP Dr. Harsha de Silva, the commission outlined an operational expansion intended to align with Sri Lanka’s anti-corruption action plan and commitments under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program.

CIABOC Director General Ranga Dissanayake announced plans to establish 23 regional offices across the country by December 31, 2026. These offices will utilize a mix of renovated government buildings and rented premises. To support this expansion, the commission intends to recruit 971 new staff members. Essential equipment for these offices, valued at approximately Rs. 109 million, is expected to be funded through a USD 2.5 million Japanese grant provided via the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Additionally, the commission reported that nearly 34,000 individuals have been identified for failing to submit required declarations of assets and liabilities under the new Anti-Corruption Act. Late fees collected from these individuals will be credited directly to the commission’s fund. The COPF also addressed administrative improvements, agreeing that future budget estimates must be submitted to the Speaker by May 30 to prevent delays in the national budget process.
