Cian McPhillips Wins Irish 800m Title as Sophie O'Sullivan Breaks 1500m Record
Cian McPhillips claimed his first senior outdoor title in the men’s 800 m at the Irish National Track and Field Championships in Santry, Dublin, finishing in 1:47.76. He was chased by Cillian Kirwan, who took silver in 1:49.36, while Bobby More earned bronze. McPhillips, who placed fourth in the 800 m at the previous World Championships, overcame a year of dental surgery, a knee injury and missed indoor competition before returning to form in May.
In the women’s 1500 m, Sophie O’Sullivan set a new championship record of 4:05.62, besting her mother Sonia O’Sullivan’s 1995 mark of 4:07.09. The victory positions her as a medal contender for the upcoming European Championships. The evening also featured a community run with European champion Ciara Mageean and over 400 junior athletes celebrating Irish athletics heritage.
