Ciane and Saline Nature Reserve management reform proposed

Giuseppe Carta, regional deputy and president of the Environment, Territory, and Mobility Commission of the ARS, has proposed a new law to reform the management of the Ciane and Saline Nature Reserve in Syracuse. The bill aims to establish a permanent consultation committee to involve environmental associations, local entities, sports organizations, and citizens in a more participatory management model. Carta argues that the goal is to balance ecosystem protection with sustainable tourism and social use.

The proposal has faced criticism from environmental groups, including the Comitato Parchi and LIPU. Critics argue that after 42 years of management issues, the reserve does not need more legislative formulas or committees, but rather accountability and a resolution to long-standing environmental crises. They have characterized the proposed law as political rhetoric that risks blurring lines of responsibility by multiplying the number of involved parties.

In response to calls for revoking the current management mandate from the Libero Consorzio Michelangelo Giansiracusa, Carta has stated that revocation is not a priority. He maintains that integration and improving existing management through cooperation is a more effective path than institutional confrontation.
