Cicadas emerge across Chicago area

Cicadas are producing a summer chorus across the Chicago area, including neighborhoods such as Garfield Park, Lake View, and Oak Park. While residents have noted an increase in noise, experts from the Morton Arboretum describe the volume as “inconclusive.”

Some observers suggest the perceived loudness may be linked to high summer temperatures, though scientific studies indicate cicadas can be less active in warm weather. The increased visibility may also be attributed to the 2024 emergence of 13-year and 17-year cicada cycles in Illinois.

Nina Salem, founder of the Insect Asylum, reported seeing more cicadas than in previous years. The loud buzzing, which can exceed 90 decibels, is produced by males performing mating calls. Experts note that areas with mature trees may experience louder choruses.
