Barcelona announces affordable supermarket initiative amid retail shifts
Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni has announced plans to create a network of affordable food outlets to combat rising grocery costs. Inspired by a model used in New York by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the initiative involves using municipal premises managed by social entities to provide fresh products at reduced prices. The first location is expected to open in the Marina del Prat Vermell neighborhood by 2027.
The proposal has met resistance from the private retail sector, with critics warning that selling below market prices could constitute unfair competition and threaten the viability of local businesses. Unlike the New York model, which involves direct public management with private oversight, Barcelona’s plan will rely on third-sector organizations.
In separate retail developments, El Corte Inglés has launched a new gastronomic model at its Diagonal location in Barcelona. The expanded Club del Gourmet features a 750-square-meter space with a dedicated tasting bar and on-site kitchen. This new format allows customers to purchase products directly from the shelves and consume them immediately at the bar, blurring the line between retail and dining.
