CICYTEX to test new fig tree varieties for Spanish registration

The Extremadura Center for Scientific and Technological Research (CICYTEX) has been appointed to examine new fig tree varieties seeking official registration in Spain. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) formalized a management agreement with the organization to conduct technical varietal identification tests over the next four years.

Tests will be conducted at CICYTEX facilities following protocols established by the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) and the Spanish Plant Variety Office (OEVV). The objective is to ensure each new variety possesses distinct characteristics that differentiate it from existing ones by comparing them against a reference collection. This process is a prerequisite for registration in both protected and commercial variety registries.

CICYTEX was selected due to its specialized expertise, human and material resources, and suitable agroclimatic location. The center is already approved by the CPVO as a testing center for this species and has previously conducted examinations for the Spanish Plant Variety Office.
