Turkey experiences significant bonito abundance and price drops
Turkey is experiencing a major abundance of bonito (palamut) following the end of the fishing ban on September 1. This surge in supply has led to a significant decrease in prices across various regions, including Istanbul, Balıkesir, İzmir, and Kastamonu.
In Kastamonu’s Cide district, prices have dropped from 200 TL at the start of the season to between 40 and 60 TL per kilogram. In Balıkesir’s Bandırma district, bonito is being sold for approximately 100 TL per kilogram. In İzmir, the municipal fish market reported an 8% increase in transaction volume for September, with bonito seeing a massive jump in volume compared to previous years.
Experts and fishermen note that the current migration is at its peak, with fish moving from the Black Sea toward the Marmara Sea and eventually the Mediterranean. While the abundance provides an affordable, nutrient-rich option for consumers and families, some local fishermen expressed concerns that the low prices make it difficult to cover operational costs, though many are relying on high sales volumes to compensate.
