The Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) consortium has selected Ciena to upgrade its 17,000km subsea cable system, which connects Western Europe with West and South Africa through 18 landing stations.

Using Ciena’s 6500 platform and WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) coherent optics, the upgrade will increase capacity to more than 30Tbps. The deployment will be integrated into existing submarine line terminal equipment, a method intended to expand infrastructure with minimal operational impact and without the need for complex traffic migrations.

The ACE cable system serves more than 500 million people across 20 countries, including landlocked nations such as Mali and Niger. The upgrade aims to support growing demand for digital inclusion, cloud adoption, and economic growth across the African continent.
