Cienciano defeats Botafogo 6-1 in Copa Sudamericana
Cienciano defeated Botafogo 6-1 in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana round of 16 at the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega Stadium in Cusco, Peru. Playing at an altitude of approximately 3,400 meters, the Peruvian side dominated the match, scoring four goals in the first half and two in the second.
Matías Succar led the scoring with a hat-trick, while Neri Bandiera scored twice and Marcos Martinich added one. Matheus Martins scored the lone goal for Botafogo. The heavy defeat marks a historic moment for Botafogo, as it is the largest margin of defeat against a foreign opponent in a CONMEBOL competition and the first time the club has conceded six goals to an international side in such a tournament.
Botafogo now faces a significant challenge in the second leg, which will take place at the Nilton Santos Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on August 20. To advance directly, the Brazilian team must win by at least six goals, or by five goals to force a penalty shootout.
