Cienciano beats Lanús 4-0, advances to Copa Sudamericana round of 16

Peruvian club Cienciano overturned a 0‑2 first‑leg deficit against Argentine champions Lanús by winning the second leg 4‑0 at the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega stadium in Cusco. The goals came from Ecuadorian striker Carlos Garcés, who scored twice (including a knee‑deflection), and Peruvian forward Alejandro Hohberg, who also netted twice. The high altitude of Cusco (over 3,300 m) was cited as a decisive factor. The victory secured Cienciano a place in the round of 16 of the 2026 Copa Sudamericana, where they will meet Brazilian side Botafogo. CONMEBOL awarded the club a prize of $600,000 (about 2 million soles) for reaching this stage. The result adds to Cienciano’s historic résumé, which includes a 2003 Sudamericana title and a 2004 Recopa win.
