Santiago commemorates 163rd anniversary of Battle of Santiago

Authorities and civic organizations in Santiago, Dominican Republic, held ceremonies to commemorate the 163rd anniversary of the Battle of Santiago, a pivotal event in the Dominican Restoration War. The commemoration took place at the Fortaleza San Luis, honoring the combatants who fought to reclaim national sovereignty following the country's annexation to Spain in 1861.

The historical event, which occurred on September 6, 1863, involved intense fighting between restorative forces and Spanish troops. Key leaders of the movement included Gregorio Luperón, Gaspar Polanco, Gregorio de Lora, and Benito Monción. During the battle, restorative forces utilized extreme measures, such as burning parts of the city, to hinder Spanish operations and prevent reinforcements from consolidating control.

The anniversary ceremonies included military honors, the raising of the national flag, and the laying of floral offerings. The Permanent Commission of Patriotic Ephemerides, along with the Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Education, emphasized the importance of preserving this historical legacy to strengthen national identity and the understanding of the struggle for independence among new generations.
