Cienfuegos faces water contamination and power shortages

The province of Cienfuegos is facing a severe collapse of basic services, including widespread water contamination and critical electricity shortages.

Residents in several neighborhoods, including Reina, Pastorita, and Pueblo Griffo, have reported that tap water is contaminated with dirt, debris, algae, and various organisms such as dragonfly larvae, red worms, and insects. Local inhabitants have expressed frustration with the Cienfuegos Water and Sewerage Company and the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Microbiology, describing the water quality as untenable.

Simultaneously, the region is struggling with a massive energy deficit. Reports indicate that the province has faced a shortfall of over 85 MW for months, exacerbated by emergency shutdowns at the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Thermoelectric Plant. These power outages, which in some areas last several days at a time, have disrupted food supplies and commercial operations at recreational sites and local businesses, leaving families without essential services as the new school year approaches.
