Cilia Flores bail hearing scheduled for October 8 in New York

U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein has scheduled a hearing for October 8, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. to evaluate a bail request filed by Cilia Flores, the wife of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Flores, who is currently held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, is facing federal charges related to drug trafficking and weapons offenses.

Flores's legal team has petitioned for house arrest in a private New York residence, citing a severe deterioration in her cardiac health. The defense claims she has experienced arrhythmias, chest pain, and a weight loss of over 11 kilograms since her detention in January. To address potential flight risks, the defense proposed a strict monitoring plan involving 24/7 armed security provided by Guidepost Solutions, electronic tracking, and restricted communications.

The court has established a procedural timeline: federal prosecutors must respond to the request by September 23, and the defense may file a rebuttal by September 30. Additionally, Judge Hellerstein has ordered that Flores's full medical history remains under seal to protect her privacy. The main trial for Flores and Maduro is currently scheduled to begin on June 1, 2027.
