Cilia Flores' defense requests bail citing deteriorating health

Defense attorneys for Cilia Flores, wife of deposed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, have renewed their request for bail, citing a significant deterioration in her health while held at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC).

According to court documents, Flores, 69, has experienced serious cardiovascular issues, including a streak of 33 ventricular tachycardia beats and a 30-minute episode of intense chest oppression. Her legal team also noted substantial weight loss and the loss of two molar teeth. They argue that the MDC is an unsuitable environment for her potential recovery following a recommended cardiac catheterization.

Federal prosecutors oppose the request, arguing that Flores poses an extreme flight risk and a danger to public safety. The defense has countered these claims by stating that Flores lacks the financial resources to fund a legal defense or flee the country, having testified under oath to her lack of funds.

Flores and Maduro face charges including conspiracy to import cocaine and possession of machine guns and destructive devices as part of a long-running narcoterrorism and corruption investigation. Their joint trial is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2027.
