Cilia Flores faces serious heart condition in U.S. prison

Cilia Flores, the wife of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, is facing a serious health crisis while detained in a federal prison in Brooklyn, New York. According to her stepson, Venezuelan deputy Nicolás Maduro Guerra, Flores suffers from a delicate heart condition, specifically a heart prolapse, which could lead to heart failure if not treated.

Flores, 69, is currently being prosecuted in the United States on narcotics charges involving the transport of cocaine. Her legal team has repeatedly requested house arrest to allow her to receive specialized medical care, including a necessary coronary examination and potential intervention. However, U.S. federal prosecutors successfully argued against her release, citing her as an extreme flight risk and a danger to the community.

In addition to her cardiac issues, Flores is asthmatic and reportedly suffered respiratory distress after prison authorities used pepper spray to control a fight between inmates. Her family noted that she has also experienced new blood pressure issues since her capture in January. The trial for Flores and Maduro is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2027.
