Cillian O'Connor announces retirement from Mayo GAA

Mayo footballer Cillian O'Connor has announced his retirement from inter-county football. The decision comes shortly after Mayo secured their first All-Ireland Senior Football Championship title in 75 years in 2026.

O'Connor, a record scorer in championship football, concludes a distinguished career spanning approximately 15 to 16 years. His achievements include seven Connacht titles, two National Football League titles, two All-Star awards, and two GAA/GPA Young Footballer of the Year awards.

In a statement released through Mayo GAA, O'Connor described representing the county as the ‘greatest honour’ of his life. He expressed gratitude to his family, teammates, coaches, and supporters. Mayo manager Andy Moran paid tribute to the veteran player, noting the privilege of experiencing his career both as a teammate and a manager.
