CIM opposes electoral law changes for Italians living abroad

Federico Conte, president of the Confederation of Italians in the World (CIM), has criticized proposed changes to Italy’s electoral law regarding the representation of citizens living abroad. Alongside founder and emeritus president Angelo Sollazzo, Conte urged the Chamber of Deputies to reconsider plans that would reduce the current four overseas constituencies in the Chamber to two, and establish a single global constituency in the Senate.

Conte argued that reducing these divisions weakens the principle of territorial representation. He noted that different regions, such as Europe and the Americas, represent diverse communities with distinct histories, social conditions, and relationships with Italy. The CIM maintains that compressing political representation for millions of citizens contradicts the need for Italy to invest in its global presence and follows recent restrictive citizenship policies.
