Brazilian Congress: Research shows majority of votes oppose indigenous rights
Research conducted by the Missionary Indigenous Council (Cimi) reveals that a majority of legislative actions in the Brazilian Congress negatively impact indigenous rights. Through its Anti-Indigenous Congress platform, Cimi analyzed 525 legislative propositions presented since the country's redemocratization.
An analysis of 41,391 votes cast by senators and federal deputies between January 2019 and July 2024 shows that 67.56% of votes were against indigenous rights, while only 31.60% were in favor. Among the 28 political parties involved, 19 voted predominantly against indigenous interests.
The Liberal Party (PL) was identified as the most opposed, with 95.9% of its votes cast against indigenous rights. Other parties with high opposition rates include the Progressive Party (PP) and União Brasil. Currently, over 325 bills related to indigenous rights are pending in the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, with 272 of them directly harming indigenous rights.
