CIMMYT opens sustainable agriculture training center in Morelos
The International Center for Maize and Wheat Improvement (CIMMYT) has inaugurated the International Training Center in Sustainable Agricultural Technologies (CIMCITI) in Tlaltizapán, Morelos. The facility spans 20 active hectares dedicated to experiments involving native maize, rice, water management, digital technologies, and mechanization.
The United States is providing 40 million dollars in investment to support CIMMYT’s agricultural research efforts. This funding aims to address critical challenges faced by producers, including climate change, drought, and pests such as Fusarium.
Mexico’s Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRICULTURA) intends to coordinate scientific research to develop more resilient seed varieties and promote agroecology, soil recovery through microbial consortia, and efficient water management. The strategy also includes economic measures such as the ‘Cosechando Soberanía’ program to reduce production costs through consolidated purchasing and improved financing for farmers.
