Cincinnati Bengals coach Zac Taylor discusses rule violation and preseason plans

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor admitted to breaking an NFL rule for eight years by having a staff member initiate replay challenges instead of throwing the challenge flag himself. Taylor explained that he designated chief of coaching staff Doug Rosfeld to handle the flag because Taylor is often unable to see all plays while communicating with players. The NFL recently announced a new rule allowing coaches to designate sideline staff for challenges, a practice Taylor says he has performed without previous issue.

Separately, the Bengals are preparing for their 2026 preseason opener against the Detroit Lions at Paycor Stadium. Head coach Zac Taylor confirmed that several starters, including quarterback Joe Burrow, wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, are expected to see action, though likely for limited series. The game will also provide a platform for backup players and rookies, such as defensive end Cashius Howell, to gain live action experience.
