Cincinnati Reds and Toronto Blue Jays face final series after playoff elimination

The Cincinnati Reds and Toronto Blue Jays enter their final series of the 2026 season having both been eliminated from postseason contention. The Blue Jays' playoff hopes ended following a sweep by the Baltimore Orioles, while the Reds have been out of the race for several months.

Individual storylines remain prominent. Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz is approaching the 30/30 club after hitting his 30th home run of the season. In Toronto, first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has faced scrutiny following a difficult season under his $500 million contract extension, with Guerrero noting that the deal was based on past accomplishments rather than future projections.

Off the field, reports indicate growing tension within the Reds organization. President of baseball operations Nick Krall reportedly clashed with owner Bob Castellini after several potential trades were blocked by ownership. This friction comes as the franchise seeks to replicate the sustained success of small-market teams like the Milwaukee Brewers.
