Cine Íris diversifies operations amid Rio de Janeiro urban renewal

Cine Íris, one of the last active street cinemas in downtown Rio de Janeiro, is diversifying its operations to align with the urban requalification of Rua da Carioca. Managed by the family of its founder, João Cruz Júnior, the historic establishment—founded in 1909—plans to introduce guided tours, special events, and period film screenings.

The management is also studying the addition of a beer service to match the changing commercial profile of the area. The street has undergone significant municipal improvements, including new paving, lighting, and accessibility upgrades, which have reduced vehicle lanes to prioritize pedestrians and urban furniture. This shift is reflected in the growing presence of breweries along the street, which reported significant beer sales in 2025.
