Cinema development faces infrastructure and funding hurdles in Guinea and Mayotte

Aspiring filmmakers in Guinea and Mayotte are navigating significant obstacles to professionalize their craft, primarily due to a lack of infrastructure and consistent funding.

In Guinea, young creators face a shortage of regular screening venues, which limits their ability to reach audiences and generate revenue. While initiatives like the Sabou Ciné Talents program at Saboutech in Conakry provide training and project development, the sector struggles with the absence of sustainable production financing and permanent cinemas. The Franco-Guinean Cultural Center remains one of the few consistent venues for film in the capital.

In Mayotte, the Ciné Mamoudzou initiative has focused on training 35 young people, emphasizing storytelling and scriptwriting over mere technical camera skills. Led by director Nahid Abdourraquib and the organization EXPLO’S, the program aims to show youth that film careers are possible locally. The project, supported by the Fondation En Revanche, seeks to bridge the gap between local experiences and professional filmmaking despite the territory's limited cinematic infrastructure.
