Cinema festivals in Tunisia and France highlight themes of conflict and exile

The 39th edition of the Kélibia International Amateur Film Festival (Fifak) recently concluded in Tunisia. Organized by the Tunisian Federation of Amateur Filmmakers, the event focused on the theme ‘Cinema and image… in times of wars and crises,’ serving as a platform for reflection on the role of imagery in a world marked by conflict.

The festival featured international and national competitions, including short films, photography, and screenwriting. It emphasized the transmission of cinematic knowledge and provided a space for independent creators and film clubs to showcase their work.

In France, the second edition of the Arkawit Film Festival opened in Paris, dedicated to Sudanese cinema. Running until September 6, the festival explores the theme ‘Exiles and engagements,’ aiming to highlight Sudanese creative works that are often underrepresented in France.

Many of the featured films were produced after 2023 by filmmakers living in exile. The screenings address the impact of political upheaval and war on personal and societal experiences, often focusing on the indirect consequences of conflict on characters and children.
