German cinema market sees strongest recovery since pandemic

The German cinema industry is experiencing a significant recovery, with the first half of 2026 marking its strongest performance since the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Federal Film Board (FFA), approximately 47.5 million tickets were sold between January and June, representing a 16.9% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Revenue rose by 24.5%, reaching roughly 502.2 million euros, a growth partially attributed to higher ticket prices.

This resurgence is driven largely by major Hollywood blockbusters, specifically Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. The success of these films has led to the colloquial term ‘Spodyssey’ in English-language media. Other notable performers include ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Film’ and the Michael Jackson biopic ‘Michael’.

While ticket volumes remain about 6 million lower than the 2019 pre-pandemic peak, industry experts are optimistic. FFA Executive Director Peter Dinges stated that if current trends continue, 2026 could become the most successful year for German cinemas since the pandemic. However, some analysts warn that rising production budgets and ticket costs may challenge long-term sustainability. Additionally, the demand for premium formats like IMAX is shaping the market, as seen in recent theater renovations.
