Cinema Tepito to host María Rojo film retrospective

Cinema Tepito will host the María Rojo Retrospective from August 15 to September 5, 2026, in Mexico City. The itinerant film cycle will feature free screenings in various locations, including Tlatelolco, Tepito, and the former Lecumberri Palace.

The inaugural event will take place on August 15 at the María Rojo Performing Arts Center in Tlatelolco, coinciding with National Mexican Cinema Day and the actress's birthday. The opening program includes a screening of "María de mi corazón" (1979), directed by Jaime Humberto Hermosillo and written by Gabriel García Márquez, as well as the public premiere of a restored version of the short film "Idilio."

During the ceremony, María Rojo will receive the first "Reconocimiento Changarro de Barrio a la Trayectoria Fílmica." This new distinction was created by Cinema Tepito to honor individuals who have significantly contributed to the development and preservation of Mexican cinematic heritage from a community-based perspective.
