Cinépolis becomes world leader in number of cinema complexes

Cinépolis has surpassed AMC Theatres to become the global leader in the number of cinema complexes. According to data from CM Data Lab as of October 2026, the Mexican company operates 889 complexes, ahead of AMC Theatres, which has 845.

While Cinépolis leads in the total number of locations, AMC Theatres maintains a significant advantage in the total number of individual screens and auditoriums. The Mexican company continues to rely heavily on its domestic market, with more than half of its establishments located in Mexico. As of late 2024, the company operated 499 complexes in Mexico and maintained a presence in 17 other countries.

Founded from a family business in Morelia, Michoacán, the company has expanded from its origins in 1943 into a major international player. In addition to its global expansion, the chain continues to offer various consumer promotions in Mexico, including discounted tickets and loyalty program benefits.
