Italy reports multiple gas intoxication incidents

Multiple incidents of gas-related intoxication have been reported across different regions in Italy.

In Cinquefrondi, a father, mother, and daughter were hospitalized after inhaling gases produced by the fermentation of grape must in a cellar. Firefighters from Polistena used breathing apparatus to rescue the family and ventilate the area. Authorities noted that carbon dioxide, an odorless and colorless gas, can rapidly displace oxygen in poorly ventilated spaces during fermentation.

On Mount Etna, the Rifugio Sapienza hotel-restaurant was evacuated after several guests fell ill. Preliminary investigations suggest carbon monoxide poisoning. At least four guests were hospitalized, and 33 other people were evacuated as a precaution. Carabinieri and firefighters are investigating the source of the fumes, especially following reports of a previous death at the facility.

Other unrelated local incidents include a police crackdown on illegal activities in Crotone, a car fire in Castelfranco suspected to be arson, and a rescue by an off-duty carabiniere in Messina after two students were swept out to sea by currents.
