Cinta Senese pig breed faces extinction risk from African Swine Fever

The Consorzio di Tutela della Cinta Senese DOP has issued an alarm regarding the impact of African Swine Fever (ASF) on the Cinta Senese breed. The consortium reports that approximately 10% of the animals have already been culled, threatening a genetic heritage developed over fifty years.

Due to the breed's semi-wild breeding status in areas with high wild boar density, it is highly exposed to the virus. The consortium is working on several fronts, including 'ex situ' conservation projects in locations such as Gorgona, Porto Azzurro, and Pianosa, as well as coordinating with the Tuscany Region and a national coalition of fifteen organizations to protect the genetic stock. The consortium clarified that ASF affects only pigs and wild boars and poses no risk to human health.
