Italian Carabinieri shut down sites and fine firms for illegal labor and safety breaches

Carabinieri inspections across several Italian regions uncovered serious violations of workplace safety and illegal employment. In the province of Como, checks at private construction sites led to the suspension of two projects and total fines of roughly €52,000 for missing safety plans, unsafe portable ladders, inadequate fall‑protection measures and other breaches of the national health‑and‑safety code.

In Calabria’s Crotone area, authorities discovered a 2011‑born minor working without a contract on a public‑works contract. The company was ordered to pay a €12,480 administrative sanction and its activity was halted; additional penalties were imposed for failing to provide mandatory health surveillance. A similar case in Cirò involving the same minority worker resulted in comparable sanctions and a criminal referral.

The Carabinieri unit in Rieti (Cottanello) found an employer using scaffoldings without required guardrails, prompting a suspension of the business and fines exceeding €5,500. In Avellino, the Guardia di Finanza denounced the owner of a fuel‑station retailer for exploiting three employees, charging them with illegal work practices and safety violations and referring the case to the public prosecutor.

These coordinated enforcement actions aim to curb black‑market labor, protect worker health, and reinforce compliance with Italy’s labor and safety regulations.
