Circadian rhythm and sleep management strategies
Managing sleep patterns and aligning the circadian rhythm are essential for cognitive performance, energy levels, and physical recovery. While sleeping extra hours on weekends may seem like a way to compensate for weekday sleep deprivation, the body relies on two main processes: sleep homeostasis and the circadian rhythm. The latter is regulated by light exposure, temperature, and routine.
Disrupting the biological clock by irregular waking times or late-night intense exercise can cause hormonal imbalances. For instance, cortisol levels naturally rise in the morning to aid focus, while melatonin increases as light fades to prepare the body for deep sleep. When these cycles are misaligned, individuals may experience difficulty concentrating during the day or feel alert at midnight, even if they have slept sufficient hours.
